- History | Southern Idaho Solid Waste
History In August of 1988, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published new regulations for solid waste disposal known as 'Subtitle D'. These regulations called for expensive landfill improvements, and motivated local government to examine options for solid waste disposal. In 1989, a Solid Waste Planning Group formed in Southern Idaho and met monthly to explore options to meet the proposed EPA regulations. In 1991, Idaho legislature passed a law authorizing the formation of regional waste districts. In 1992, the Southern Idaho Regional Solid Waste District formed. Sites for the regional landfill were explored with input from the public. Construction at Milner Butte Landfill began in 1993 and opened for operation on April 6, 1994, four days ahead of federal mandate. Prior to this, counties each had their own disposal sites. In June of that year, work began to close and cap the seventeen county-owned landfills. The SISW system currently features a state-of-the-art municipal solid waste landfill, fourteen waste transfer stations, a waste transportation system, a 3.9 MW landfill-gas-to-energy facility, an effective waste diversion system, a public information and education network, and a special waste management system for problem wastes.

- Waste Diversion | Southern Idaho Solid Waste
DON'T DUMP IT, DIVERT IT! Our Future is on the line: Join the Essential Waste Diversion Movement! Keep wood waste seperate from your trash so we are able to easily keep it out of the landfill. We have special locations and bins at our transfer stations, roll-off stations and the landfill to easily keep wood waste from filling up unneccessary space in the landfill. Green Wood Waste Green-wood waste is diverted from the waste stream and is ground up throughout our district. This material is then used for various purposes, including mulch, landfill cover and road maintenance, helping to lower costs associated with using alternative materials. Dimensional Lumber Dimensional lumber is also diverted from the waste stream and ground up to use for special purposes such as road base and landfill cover through out the district. Batteries Southern Idaho Solid Waste District accepts household batteries at its facilities. Acceptable batteries include the following battery types generated by a household or individual and are NOT associated with a commercial business. Batteries are harmful to the environment, they should not be disposed of in garbage or recycling bins, as they can pose a significant fire hazard to homes, transfer stations, vehicles, trailers, and landfills. Proper handling of these batteries is crucial for safety. Rechargable Batteries: Rechargeable Batteries include Lithium-Ion, NiCd, NiMH, and Sealed Lead-Acid. Keep these batteries separate from your garbage or recycling bins. Place them in their own individual plastic bag. They pose a serious fire risk to our employees and facilities. Alkaline Batteries: Alkaline Batteries include AA, AAA, C, 9-volt, etc… Rusty, broken, or corroded Alkaline batteries will not be accepted for recycling. Alkaline Batteries may be comingled into a single bag or container. Cell phone and Laptop Batteries Laptops and cell phones often use lithium-ion batteries. Keep these batteries separate from your household waste and you can recycle them at any of our Transfer Sites or the Milner Butte Landfill. The roll-off sites in Cassia County do not accept electronic waste. Automotive Batteries Vehicle Batteries include SLI, Deep Cycle, and Lead-Acid are accepted at our facilities. Electric vehicle batteries will not be accepted at any of our locations. Please contact your dealer for proper disposal options. Tires Southern Idaho Solid Waste accepts all size of tires on or off the rims. There are multiple uses for recycled tires including road construction, playground surfaces, ruffing shingles, and landscape mulch among many more. Tires contain heavy metals and chamicals that can leak into the ground and ground water, they are bulky and do not biodegrade. Idaho law prohibits the disposal of tires in landfills. Scrap Metals Most metals are not biodegradable and can emit toxins into both the air and waterways. To promote recycling efforts, Southern Idaho Solid Waste makes it convenient for the public by offering diversion bins district wide.
