Mercury Acceptance Policy

FAILURE TO COMPLETE ALL REQUIREMENTS MAY RESULT IN LOAD REFUSAL

The Southern Idaho Solid Waste District (SISW) accepts household thermometers, thermostats, and small (household) amounts of elemental mercury. To protect the safety of our personnel, please follow these instructions:

  1. Thermometers and thermostats must be sealed and secured in cardboard, bubble wrap, or some other reasonable type of protection.
  2. For disposal/recycling of elemental mercury, please contact the SISW HSE Specialist.
  3. Take the sealed container directly to your nearest transfer station and alert the operator on duty that you have a mercury-containing product.
  4. Thermometers with blue or red liquid inside do not contain mercury and can be thrown away with regular trash.
  5. Household Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFL’s) are not diverted- the EPA recommends that these items be double-bagged in a zip-top bag and then disposed of with regular household trash.
