Frequently Asked Questions

Which counties are served by the SISW district?

SISW provides waste management services for seven counties in South-Central Idaho: Blaine, Cassia, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Minidoka, and Twin Falls.

Most residential customers find it more convenient to use one of our 14 waste transfer stations. However, the Milner Butte Landfill (located at 1050 W 400 S, Burley) is open to the public for municipal solid waste disposal and specialized waste.

To keep Southern Idaho beautiful and safe, all loads must be secured or tarped per Idaho State Code. Unsecured debris can cause accidents or litter our roadways. Vehicles arriving with unsecured loads are subject to a $10.00 fee.

We do not accept EV (Electric Vehicle) Batteries.

To prevent accidental short-circuiting and fires, we ask that you follow these simple steps before arriving:

· Tape the Terminals: Place a small piece of clear tape or electrical tape over the ends (+ and -) of Lithium-ion and 9V batteries.

· Bag Them: Small alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D) can be placed together in a clear plastic bag.

· Keep Lead-Acid Separate: Large vehicle or recreational vehicle batteries should be kept upright and not placed in bags.

· Hand to Attendant: Inform the scale house or site attendant that you have batteries so they can direct you to the specific recycling bin.

Lithium-ion batteries are high-energy rechargeable power sources commonly found in portable electronics, vapes, power tools, and many other rechargeable household items. While efficient, they pose a significant fire risk at waste facilities because they can ignite or explode if they are crushed, punctured, or overheated. To ensure safety, these batteries must be kept out of general trash and handed directly to a site attendant for specialized recycling.

This is our district-wide initiative to save landfill space. We urge residents to separate items like clean wood, scrap metal, and hazardous waste from their general trash. These items are placed in specific diversion bins so they can be recycled or repurposed rather than buried.

Yes. We accept tires of all sizes, on or off the rim. Because Idaho law prohibits burying tires in landfills, we collect them for recycling into road construction materials, playground surfaces, and more.

This includes tree limbs, brush, and clean, untreated dimensional lumber. By keeping this separate, we can grind it down for reuse. Please ensure there is no “treated” wood (like railroad ties, pallets or pressure-treated decking) in the green waste bins.

These items are considered Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). They should not be placed in the main waste pit. Please notify the scale attendant and they can direct you to the appropriate bin.

Yes, laptops, cell phones, and other electronics are accepted at our transfer sites and the Milner Butte Landfill

Generally, we do not accept drivable vehicles. For specific inquiries regarding large-scale demolition or unusual “special waste,” please contact the EHS Specialist
