All landfills produce methane gas. In order to manage the gas responsibly, Southern Idaho Solid Waste installed this state-of-the-art Gas Collection and Control System in September of 2009.
Inside the landfill is a system of collection pipes. There are 26 monitoring wells.
Inside the silo, 9 flukes burn at 1400 degrees Fahrenheit to destruct the potentially harmful methane gasses. More than 98% of the methane is destructed in this process.
SISW is exploring possibilities of harnessing methane for a waste to energy operation in the future.
